Level

I was responsible for creating a level for the game. It was made with outsourced assets, which were presented with pre-made sections that could be moved together into a level. Because we wanted survival as one of our main points, I wanted to avoid any dead ends, which is why it was changed to a model where the player could move around the map in a very open way. This was for the player to move around and not get stuck in one area, and to focus on using VR to look around for pickups.

The biggest problem was making sure that the gameplay complemented this level, and ensuring that the enemies were working within the assets present. In the image below from an earlier build of the game, there were many issues with making sure the enemies could move in the space present, as there could be instances where assets could break and ruin the immersion. The solution was editing the space around the assets to make sure that they were where they needed to be, and situated where they could make a reasonable impact where they were present.

Balancing and Gameplay

I was responsible for balancing the gameplay within the level I designed, as well as making documentation for how a couple systems in the game were going to work. Our idea was to make a game that had endless waves that were given to the opponent, but they needed to be challenging enough so that the player would be motivated to try and survive for as long as they can. For this, I documented and created a wave system that was implemented by the engineers, and then play tested the game to make sure that the enemies themselves were enough to make sure that things would be fun when they were implemented.
